Political participation Flashcards
Lack of political party choice
US elections are often a winner takes all situation where only two parties really stand a chance. Many voters in turn decide that they don’t agree with either party and instead choose not to vote at all. In contrast, in a multiparty system voters have more options to choose from.
For example, in the USA the two main political parties are the Democrats and Republicans.
Restrictive laws ex felons
Many US states require ex-felons who are free from punishment to go through a detailed and difficult process of restoring their ability to vote. In some US states, ex felons are stripped of their voting rights entirely.
It is estimated that in 2018 5.8 million Americans are barred from participating in elections due to having a felony conviction.
