Q

Smaller Parties Get Better Representation

A

Because of the proportional representation system used, smaller parties have a chance of being represented in Parliament. This means more people have a chance of having their views expressed in politics.

For example, in 2021 there are currently 8 Scottish Green MSPs and 4 Scottish Liberal Democrat MSPs

Q

Fairer Voting System

A

The second ballot paper makes sure that the result of the election is fairer and more proportional. This is because the percentage of votes a party receives roughly equals the number of seats they can have in Parliament.

For example, in the 2021 Scottish Parliament Election the Scottish Greens received 4.7% of the vote and gained 8 seats.

Q

Less Wasted Votes

A

Here, every vote is important. Individual votes are not wasted because the 2nd Ballot paper takes all votes into consideration. This is unlike First Past the Post where the winner takes all and many are left without representation.

For example, even if a Kilmarnock and Irvine Valley constituent did not vote for Willie Coffee in the 2021 election, they still have 7 other regional MSPs who represent their views in Parliament.
