Water Lesson 4: Water Budgets Flashcards
Define water budget
Shows the annual balance between inputs and outputs in the water cycle
Positive water budget?
When precipitation exceeds evapotranspiration and there is a water surplus
Negative water budget?
When evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation and there is water scarcity with an increased drought risk
Water budget eqution?
Precipitation (P) = channel discharge (Q) + evapotranspiration (E) +/- change in storage (S)
Define field capacity
When the soil store is at full capacity and cannot hold anymore
Define soil moisture surplus
Precipitation greater than evapotranspiration. Run off recharges groundwater supply- the soil is at field capacity
Define soil moisture deficiency
Soil water store has been used up. Plants will only survive if they have adaptations to survive periods of drought or they are irrigated
Define maximum annual temperature
River levels will fall, crops will need irrigation
Define soil moisture recharge
When evapotranspiration decreases so that it is lower than precipitation and the soil store will start to recharge
Define soil moisture utilisation
Evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation. Water is being drawn up through the soil by capillary action- the water is being used up
What is point A?
Soil moisture surplus
What is point B?
Soil moisture utilisation
What is point C?
Maximum annual temperature
What is point D?
Soil moisture deficiency
What is point E?
Soil moisture recharge
