Tectonics Lesson 5: Conservative Plate Boundaries Flashcards
What happens at a conservative plate boudnary?
2 plates slide past one another resulting in a major break in the crust between them as they move.
What is the break in the crust known as?
Fault but on a large scale this is a transform fault
What is the movement of a plate to the left known as?
Sinistral
What is movement of a plate to the right known as?
Dextral
How are the two plates different from each other?
The plates travel of different speeds
What are earthquakes like at conservative plate boundaries?
Shallow and powerful occurring from the frictional resistance. Shallow due to no Benioff zone forming
Example of a conservative plate boundary
San Andreas Fault
When was the last major earthquake at San Andreas?
1906 at an 8.3 magnitude
Why will the next earthquake along the San Andreas be a large one?
Not been a major earthquake for a long time, so the pressure and friction has been building for a long time, and the fact that earthquakes along conservative boundaries are shallow, the big one will cause much damage and destruction
