Viruses Flashcards
Are viruses alive? Why/why not?
No, they are not made of cells and cannot reproduce or obtain energy without a host cell
What 2 components are viruses made of
a protein coat and a nucleic acid core (DNA or RNA)
Whats smaller bacteria or viruses
viruses (100x smaller)
Why do viruses need a host cell
transcribe and translate their genetic material and reproduce
whats viral replication
When a virus copies a host cells genetic material and reproduces/ it spreads
Viral disease examples
measles, small pox, hepatitis, rabies
Whats the best defense for viruses
vaccines
When should vaccines be given (before or after contact)
before contact
When was the first vaccine developed
late 1700
How do vaccines work
they contain weakened or killed microorganism that will stimulate you immune system to create antibodies
What would happen if you came in contact with a virus if you had the vaccine
If you had the vaccine your body will recognize it and know what to do/ be better able to fight it off
What is heard immunity
Vaccines protect more than just you, they protect the people around you. You stop the spread of diseases
how do cells reproduce and gain energy
through their host cell
