Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
study of interactions between different organisms and the organisms and their environment
Biotic factors
living factors that influence and ecosystem
Abiotic factors
nonliving factors that influence an ecosystem
Niche
involves where an organism lives and its roles in its habitat
3 main types of interactions
Competition
Predation
Symbiosis
Competition
more than one organism uses the same resource at the same time
Predation
one species uses the other as food
Predator
the organism that eats the other
Prey
organism that is eaten
What do predators and prey have in common
they both have adaptions that increase chances of survival
Symbiosis
Occurs when two organisms live together
- At least one benefits from the relationship
3 types of Symbiosis
Mutualism
Commensalism
Parasitism
Mutualism
1 benefits
#2 benefits
Commensalism
1 benefits
#2 not hurt or helped
Parasitism
1 benefits
#2 is hurt
Parasitism
1 benefits
#2 is hurt
Ecological sucession
Series of predictable changes that occurs in a community over time
Primary Succession
Succession that occurs on a surface where no soil exists
In primary sucession what organisms are often first and why
lichens because they do not require soil
pioneer species
the first species to populate a area
Secondary sucession
Follows a disturbance that destroy the community without destroying the soil
ex. forest after a fire
