A
  • Reduces myocardial O2 demand through its negative inotropic & chronotropic effects
  • Slows conduction and prolongs refractoriness in the AV node by blocking calcium at the slow channels
  • Decreases automaticity of all pacemaker cells
  • Increases coronary blood flow by decreasing coronary spasm
  • Relaxes vascular smooth muscle which decreases systemic vascular resistance

Contraindications (6)

A
  • Hypotension
  • Conduction defects > 1st degree AV block
  • Pt taking beta blockers
  • WPW with Afib or flutter (ventricular rate may accelerate)
  • Wide complex tachycardias of unknown origin
  • CHF
