- Ultra short-acting non-barbituate, non-benzodiazepine hypnotic with no analgesic effects
- May have GABA-like effects that depresses the RAS
- Minimal cardiovascular and respiratory effects
- Does not release histamine

Contraindications (2)
A
- Known hypersensitivity to barbituates
- Should not be used in children under 10 y.o.

A
- May cause increasing airway resistance worsening bronchospasms in severe asthma
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hypotension
- Elderly

- Myoclonic/Tonic activity (common)
- Apnea
- Laryngospasms
- Hyper/hypoventilation
- Hyper/hypotension
- Tachy/bradyarrhythmias
- N/V
- Pain at the injection site

Precautions (2)
A
- Flumazenil does not reverse Etomidate
- Verapamil may prolong respiratory depression

Dosage/Route
A
- Adult 0.3 mg/kg (0.1-0.3 mg/kg IV over 15-30 sec)
- Onset of action begins within 10-20 sec
- Peaks within 1 minute and lasts for 3-5 minutes
