Peds Dose

A
  • For newborns, 10% Dex solution 0.2g/kg dose IV; D50 solution 1 part to 4 parts NS. 0.2mg/kg is supplied by 2 ml/kg of D10W
  • For infants and children <30kg, 25% Dex solution 0.5g/kg dose IV. Mix D50 with an equal volume of NS to provide D25. 0.5g/kg is supplied by 2 ml/kg of D25W.
  • For all other children, 0.5g/kg (1 ml/kg of 50% Dex) up to a max of 25g

Precautions

A
  • Use large bore catheter
  • Undiluted D50 in neonates causes intracerebral bleeds
  • Should be preceded by thiamine (if available) in suspected alcoholic pts to avoid the possibility of inducing encephalopathy in thiamine deficient pts
