Actions (2)
A
- Inhibits Na and Cl reabsorption in the proximal tubule and loop of Henle wich draws water with it and causes diuresis. This diuresis effect occurs about 10 mins after IV dose
- Direct venodilating effects which decreases venous return to the heart (decrease preload). This effect is seen before the diuresis effect

- Acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema
- Hypertensive crisis
- Chronic CHF

Contraindications (4)
A
- Allergy to sulfonamides
- Dehydrated pts
- Anuric pt
- Electrolyte Depletion

Side Effects (7)
A
- Hypovolemia, orthostatic hypotension
- Transient deafness, tinnitus
- Muscle cramps and weakness
- Electrolyte problems: Na, K, Cl and Mg depletion
- Signs of hypoK: postural hypotension, malaise, fatigue, leg cramps, weakness

Precautions
A
- Auscultate lungs before and after administration
- May potentiate effects of digitalis
