Describe the steps needed before venupucture

-arm

A

Don gloves
Expose patients arm, find a suitable vessel
Apply torniquet 4-5 fingers above planned site
Palpate for springy vein
Clean with swab, let it dry

A

Attaches needle to vacutainer barrel, unsheathe needle

Anchor vein with non dominant hand

Describe the process during needle insertion

A

Warn patient of insertion
Insert needle at 30 degrees or less with bevel facing upwards
Advance needle after flashback is seen
Lower and anchor needle to patient’s skin

Fill bottles in correct order
Release torniquet
Gently invert bottles to mix with reagent

A

Withdraw needle, apply gentle pressure to puncture site with gauze/cotton wool
Dispose of needle ASAP
Apply dressing
Discard equipment
