Introduction
Introduce self Check patient ID, DOB Confirm that procedure is required Gain consent PPE Ensure confidentiality
What steps would you need to take when checking the inhaler
Clean hands
Check if the correct medication is in the inhaler
Check EXP
Shake inhaler/look at no of doses remaining on meter
Explain when you would use it and why
- preventer = daily, BD (morning, evening) to prevent onset of symptoms
- reliever = when needed
What would you mention when demonstrating the correct technique
Stand/sit up straight
Hold inhaler in dominant hand
Removes lid from inhaler, shake if a metered dose inhaler and not used for 5+ days (mix up propellant and medication)
Take a deep breath out
Form a tight seal with your lips around the mouthpiece
Inhale as much as you canand press down on the inhaler to release dose
Remove inhaler, hold your breath for 10s
What would you ask the patient after your demonstration
Ask them to demonstrate technique while they observe
Identify areas of improvement and review
How would you close the consultation
