Prescribing and Administering O2 Flashcards
Introduction
Introduce self to patient
ID checks
Explains procedure, gain consent
PPE
Steps needed before O2 is prescribed
Read patient history - is this patient at risk of hypercapnic RF
- COPD, neuromuscular cond, CF, chestwall, severe obesity, bronchiectasis
- check for O2 alert card
Prescribe O2 - target sats
- 94-98% - acutely ill
- 88-92% - T2RF
Measure SaO2
What would you use for
- critically ill patients
- hypoxic patients, serious illness
- low levels of supplemental O2
NRM 15L - 94-98%
- acutely unwell + no T2RF risk
- DON”T BE AFRAID TO GIVE NRM TO CO2 RETAINERS IF ACUTELY UNWELL
Venturi (24-60%) - 88-92%
-T2RF
Nasal canula 2-4L/min
How would you administer O2
-nasal canulae - 1-6L/min
Attach tubing to O2 flow meter on wall
Turn dial on flow meter to start O2 flow
-ball must be in middle of literage line
Ensure correct size nasal canula used
Insert into nose, loop tubing around ears and secure under chin
How would you administer O2
-venturi mask
Attach venturi valve onto venturi facemask
Attach ends of tubing onto valve
Attach other end to O2 flow meter on wall
Turn dial on flow meter
-ball sits in middle of literage line
-match this to the requirements on the valve
Mask over patient’s nose and mouth
Adjust ties on mask
How would you administer O2
-NRM
Attach tubing to O2 flow meter on wall Turn dial on flow meter to 15L -ball must be in middle of literage line Cover connecting valve between mask and bag => fills bag with O2 Place mask over mouth and nose
How would you give a nebulised medication
Ensure that you check the 5 rights
Pour in liquid medication into nebuliser
Attach pot to mask and O2 tubing
Attach O2 tubing to either the air/O2 tap
Set flow rate
-ensure ball sits in the middle of the literage line
Place mask over mouth and nose
