Question 1

Preparing to scrub

• equipment

Answer 1

Theatre scrubs, shoes and hat

Open your gown and gloves

• use the edges of the paper to open the packet and expose gown => sterile field
• open glove packet, drop it into sterile field
• collect nail pick and brush
• put on face mask

Prescrub wash

Answer 2

5 strokes back and forth for each step

• hands above elbows at all times
• elbows to touch taps or dispensers

Let water run from tap
Collect scrub brush and nail pick

-3 doses of SCRUB solution, wash fingertips to elbows - 1min => rinse from hands to elbows

Nail pick, clean under nails => discard

Wet brush, apply CLEANING solution

• sponge side to clean all sides of fingers
• brush side to scrub under nails
• rinse and repeat for other hand

Subsequent scrubs

• RINSE hands and forearms
• SCRUB solution and wash in circular motion
• RINSE and dry

Scrubbing

Wet hands and forearms

Dispenses 3 pushes of CLEANING solution with elbow

• handwashing technique
• rotating action down to elbow
• rinse from fingertips to elbows

Repeat but halfway down elbow
Repeat but to wrist

Use blotting motion to dry arms with sterile towel in pack

Gowning and gloving

Answer 4

Gently shake out sterile gown, make sure it doesn’t touch anything

Open it up and place hands into sleeves
Keep hands inside the sleeves

Ask someone to help pull the gown over your shoulders and fasten it at the back

Take the right hand glove and place it palm down, fingers facing your body

Grasp the bottom of the cuff with your thumb and index finger of your right hand still inside the sleeve
Grasp the top of the cuff with your left hand inside the sleeve and pull the glove around and over your right hand

Pull gently on gown sleeve to move hands into gloves and straighten out the fingers

The sleeves of the gown should remain over most of your palm

Repeat with left hand

Once scrubbed, how to secure

Detach cardboard slip from short tie - KEEP HOLD OF SHORT TIE IN HAND

Pass cardboard slip to theatre assistant, DO NOT TOUCH THEIR HAND

Ask them to pass the tie around your back, take the tie and let them pull the cardboard off so you can tie a bow around your waist

Rest hands on your front, don’t touch anything not sterile
