What is a vasa previa?
A
- Velamentous cord insertion with umbilical vessels inserted into the membranes near or directly over the internal cervical os.
- Umbilical vessels coursing over membranes between a succenturiate lobe and main lobe near or over the cervix

How is vasa previa diagnosed?
A
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- Visualization of umbilical vessels crossing within 1-2cm of the endocervical os with color doppler

What are the maternal risks with a vasa previa?
A
- Hemorrhage
- Need for blood transfusion
- Need for cesarean section

When do you recommend hospitalization for patients with vasa previa?
A
28-32 weeks

Do you recommend bedrest for patients with vasa previa?
A
No; recommend pelvic rest and to decrease pelvic pressure

When do you recommend delivery for patient with a vasa previa?
A
34-35 weeks (up to 37 weeks - ACOG)
