Intensive Care Flashcards
Most common cause for ICU admissions
Hypertension Hemorrhage Respiratory Failure Sepsis Cardiac disease
What is preload?
volume of blood within the left or right ventricle at the end of diastole
What is afterload?
the resistance to forward flow from the right or left ventricle
What determines cardiac output?
CO = SV x HR
Indications for invasive hemodynamic monitoring?
Unresponsive shock ARDS Cardiac failure Left heart obstruction AFE
Indications for an arterial line (typically placed in radial artery)?
ARDS
Hypovolemic shock
Septic shock with hypotension
Severe eclampsia with pulmonary edema Cardiac failure
PCWP
- assesses an indirect estimate of left atrial pressure (LAP)
- normal 5-10mmHg
Central venous pressure (CVP)
right atrial pressure
Sits in the internal jugular vein
-normal 5-10mmHg
Anion gap formula
Na - [Cl + HCO3]
Preload can be measured with the following:
central venous pressure
pulmonary capillary wedge pressure
Afterload can be measured with the following:
- pulmonary vascular resistance
- systemic vascular resistance
Most common site for arterial catheter placement:
Radial artery
