- seen in male fetuses more than female
What are the risks of polyhydramnios to pregnancy?
- Malpresentation
- Preterm labor and contractions
- PPROM
- Abruption
- Cord prolapse
- PPH
- Operative delivery
When do you deliver a patient with polyhydramnios?
At term (39 weeks - 39 weeks and 6 days)
What are the two major causes for polyhydramnios?
- Reduced fetal swallowing
- Increased fetal urination
What are examples of conditions that can cause reduced fetal swallowing in the setting of polyhydramnios?
neurologic issue like anencephaly. muscular issue like myotonic dystrophy or Beckwith-Weideman
obstruction issue like CDH, pulmonary disorders, TEF
What are examples of conditions that can cause reduced fetal swallowing in the setting of polyhydramnios?
osmotic diuresis with maternal hyperglycemia
hyperdynamic circulation due to fetal anemia or fetal infection for example
