Diction
The style of writing determined by word choice, or enunciation in speech or singing.
fragment
An incomplete sentence. Ex: “Thinking about my weekend.” Lacks subject and does not state who is doing the action.
Imperative sentence
A complete sentence that conveys a command, instruction, or request and has the implied or understood subject. “you” Ex: Finish your homework!
Progressive
A verb tense indicating that the action described is currently happening. Progressive tense: (past)was walking, (present) is walking, (future) will be walking.
tense
Refers to when an action occurs past, present, or future. Ex: Simple tense. “walked, walks, will walk.”
Perfective
A verb tense indicating that the action described has been completed. Perfect tense:(past) had walked, (present)has walked, (future)will have walked.
mood
How the elements in a text such as word choice, make the reader feel. Ex: cheerful, mysterious, somber.
tone
An authors implied or explicit attitude toward a topic. Ex: sarcastic, earnest, formal

Synonyms
Words with identical or similar meanings. Ex: synonyms for “quiet” are discreet, inaudible, soft.
period
End mark that denotes the end of a standard sentence.
run-on sentences
A sentence with extra parts that are not joined properly by the correct conjunction or punctuation. Ex: The story had a thrilling ending the plot was built with suspense.
