Steps in the writing process
Five steps are: prewriting, writing, conferencing, revision, and editing.
Prewriting
Tasks writer must complete before starting to draft. These include: understanding the purpose of the writing, finding a topic, generating ideas, gathering information from sources, crafting a thesis statement, and making an organizational plan. Writers use various techniques during prewriting such as: brainstorming, stream of consciousness writing, or mind mapping.
brainstorming

stream-of-consciousness writing
A narrative device that mimics interior monologue. A Literary technique where a writer attempts to capture the flow of a character’s thoughts and feelings as they occur in their mind. Allowing the reader to “hear” the character’s inner thoughts directly as they happen.
Prewriting organizational plan
Tree diagrams, or outlines to organize their ideas.
Prewriting informal research
Informal research can be a personal essay which consist of talking to a friend or family member recalling the details of a memory or experience.
Prewriting formal research

Writing
Writing process is often called drafting, the writer drafts the paragraphs of the piece of writing ( the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion). Each paragraph has a main point and is developed with examples, details, and information. Any information borrowed from research sources is cited in the text of the paper. Sources are listed in the bibliography at the end of the paper.
Conferencing
After a finished draft, feedback from peers or writing tutors will give you ideas about what elements you might change to improve your draft.
Revision
Revision involves large-scale changes, while editing focuses more on sentence-level changes. Includes: revising the thesis statement, rewriting and rearranging paragraphs, and adding evidence to support main points, and transitional sentences to connect ideas.
Editing
Sentence-level editing includes careful review of word choice, grammar, punctuation, capital letters, and spelling, followed by proofreading.
Needed Citations

Borrowed material includes: quotations, visuals, media taken from a source, data, information that the writer has paraphrased or summarized.
