Anatomical Position Flashcards
Anatomical Planes
Anatomical planes divide the body in two.
Coronal or frontal plane
is a front and back division
Transverse or coss-sectional plane
is a top and bottom division
Sagittal or median
indicates a left and right division
Anatomical Direction
identifies the location of structures in relation to other structures
Superior & Inferior
Top and bottom
Anterior & Posterior
Front and back
Lateral & Medial
used to determine what structure is closer to the medial line, which divides the body into right and left sides. Ex: the rib cage is lateral to the sternum. Sternum is medial to the ribcage
Distal
Indicate whicn structure is farther away.
Proximal
Indicate which structure is closer to the structure.
