SEGREGATION - edcuation, law . employment, housing, voting
when was the Brown vs The board of education event and what happened?
1954: Linda Brown wanted to attend her local school as is was too dangerous to go to her segregated Balck school , so NAACP and her family took the Board of Education to the Supreme court /managed to overturn the decision, which allowed her to attend white school
who were the NAACP and what did they do?
the National association for the Advancement of Colored people - they paid for legal aid for Black families who needed their help in court
what happened to Emmett Till?
in 1955, Emmett Till was a black teen from chicago who went to Money,Mississippi after supposedly flirting with a white woman , he was murdered by 2 white boys
- his murder was so shocking it became national news /bc of unjust legal system in area, the 2 killers were found innocent
- teh whole thing made up by shopkeeper
what happened in the Montogomery Bus Boycott?
Rosa Parks refused to move from her bus for white passeneger in 1955.
-arrested , started a boycott of the bus company which lasted for nearly a year till 1956
- at end of which the bus company changed its policy /allowed black passenegers to sit wherever
what happened at Little rock , Arkansas and Ole Miss (how were they different)?
Little rock central high schl in 1957: 9 black students attened the school which was supposed to be integrated but wasnt. Governor of state sent soldiers to block their entrance whilst President Eisenhower sent national soldiers to protect them
at Ole Miss in 1962 , James Meredith went to register as a student but was met with a night of violence in which hundreds were injured/2 were killed (NAACP HELPED HIM)
in both cases, segregation came to an end in schl/uni
what were the Sit ins and Freedom rides?
The sit ins : organised by students to put an end to segregation in CAFE/RESTUARANTS
- started in North Carolina but spread /ended segregation in Tennessee in 1960
- 4 students sat in ‘white only seats’ then 23, then in a wekk 400 did this
The Freedom Rides : in 1961 / AA,CORE ACTIVISTS,sat on buses which were segregated /refused to move to force companies to allow them to ride
-200 FREEDOM FIGHTERS ARRESTED/40 days in jail

when were the 3 civil rights acts passed and what did they do?
1957- removed many JIM CROW LAWS , only increased AA voting chance by 3% - eisenhower thought it would decrease civil rights campaign but increased it instead
