what happened in Remilitarisation of the Rhineland ?
T of V banned Germany form entering Rhineland
- Feb 1936, France and USSR agreed on MUTUAL ASSISTANCE TREATY to protect them if Germany attacked
- hitler claimed he was encircled so protected his birders - ordered troops into RHINELAND
Rome - Berlin Axis ?
1936- Germany /Japan signed ANTI COMINTERN PACT - against communism
- 1937, ITALY signed pact.
- Group called AXIS ALLAINCE
the Anschluss ?
- Austria had strong NAZI party and HITLER ordered these Nazi’s to campaign for union
- threatened to move troops into Austria
- Austria chancellor asked BRITAIN/FRANCE to pressure Hitler to back down , but DID NOTHING
- tropps marched in MARCH 1938
- 99.75% OF POP agreed to ANSCHLUSS
- Hitler increased Germany pop/ added Austria’s reserves of gold/iron
Sudetenland Crisis ?
Czech leader appalled by Germany union with Austria
- Britain and France promised to protect Czech against invasion
- Hitler got Nazi’s to stir trouble/ join Germany
- MAY 1938, Hitler expressed support for Sudetenland Germans and threaten to invade
- Czech leader (Beneš) prepared to fight
- world prepared for EUROPEAN WAR
Munich conference ??
15th Sept 1938 - Chamberlain flew to Munich to meet Hitler
- Hitler was interested in PARTS OF SUDETENLAND - plebiscite showed Sudetenland Germans wanted to join Germany
- Chamberlain thought it was reasonable / thought he wld be satisfied if he got what he wanted
19th Sept - FRANCE AND BRITAIN told Czech plan to give Sudetenland to
Hitler
22nd Sept - HITLER increased demand - wanted all of Sudetenland
- Chamberlain said it was unreasonable - war was imminent
29th sept - MUSSOLINI JOINED hitler, Chamberlain and Daladier at 4 power summit in Munich
- leaders gave Hitler Sudetenland - MUNICH AGREEMENT
- Czech was not consulted
Nazi-Soviet Pact?
Stalin discussed with Chamberlain and Daladier (MARCH 1939) to arrange ALLIANCE AGAINST HITLER
- At same time, Stalin met Nazi Foreign minister for another alliance
- August, Stalin wanted alliance with Nazi Germany (terms were not to attack each other)
- privately decided to DIVIDE POLAND BETWEEN THEM
- neither Hitler and Stalin had faith in agreement ( Stalin got his forces ready for when hitler turned against him)
- HITLER thought he needed to INVADE POLAND
Invasion of Poland ?
- hitler invaded Poland - 1st sept 1939
- Britain /FRANCE helped Poland this time
- declared war on GERMANY - 3rd SEPT
