What were the disagreements at Potsdam?

A

GERMANY : - Stalin wanted to cripple Germany completely to protect USSR from future threat
- Truman disagreed - didn’t want to repeat mistake from T of V

REPARATIONS: - Stalin wanted to repayed by Germany for the loss of lives
- at first, Truman agreed, but changed mind
- stalin confused why he wanted to protect germany

EAST EUROPE: - at Yalta , Stalin had won agreement to set up PRO-SOVIET GOVERNEMENT in eastern europe
- insisted that control of region was defensive to future attacks
- Truman concerned about soviet intentions.

agree : - Stalin agreed to join war with JAPAN
- Germany can be divided into 4 - BR/FR/US/USSR
- To ensure USSR won’t be invaded, e. EUROPE would become a Soviet ‘sphere of influence’
- reparations - Stalin wanted a lot of reparations for Germany, but they thought stop Germany from recovery

disagree : - Stalin wanted border of USSR to move westwards into Poland
-churchill/roosevelt agreed bc Stalin agreed not TO INTEFERE in Greece, when BR were preventing communist take over
- Stalin wanted Germany to face a lot reparations, but others thought Germany won’t be able to recover
