The seven years’ war

A

global conflict involving most european powers but mostly between GB and France .
to boost soldiers Brits paid Prussia to send soldiers
- royal navy was 1/3 larger than France’s - prevents troops invading england
(opportunism, war between nations, defence)
- started due to issue of trade

e.g India : Clive of india beat French in 1757 at Battle of Plassey
- seven year war ended in Treaty of paris 1763

- higher taxes - RISE IN NATIONAL DEBT

gov : BRITS were more powerful - owned more land - shift in European power balance as France weakened
- controlled parts of Canada /USA - more valuable goods available from these countries - more trade - industrial revolution

The revolutionary and Napoleonic wars

A

American revolutionary war - 1776
- America wanted independence
- British American colonies rebelled against it
- France sides with America and brits lost land

FRENCH REVOLUTION 1789
- King Louis XVI of France executed in 1793
- scared brit monarchy of spread of revolution - decided to ally with Austria and Prussia to crush new french gov and reinstall old one

NAPOLEONIC WARS - 1803-15
Napoleon Bonparte - emperor of french republic
- conquers most of england (except brits)
BATTLE OF TRAFALGAR 1805: British naal hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, killed
BATTLE OF WATERLOO 1815 : British duke of wellington defeated Napoleon

direct - suspended Habeas Corpus Act 1794- could be imprisoned without trial
Combination Act 1799/1800 - prevent revolutionary activity
cultural - protests as economy was struggling FOR THE POOR
- high unemployment in Midlands and N.ENGLAND due to power looms

POLITICAL - campaign to give vote to more of population
- collapse of several monarchies, the rise of nationalism, and the spread of revolutionary ideas

- BR wanted russia to get out of black sea , so sent troops to help ottomans fight russia

INDIRECT/CULTURAL- ordinary ppl become more recognised (EG DOCTORS AS HEROS )
e.g florence nightingale - raised £30,000 to help soldiers

gov : brits get stronger - gain “champion’ status / restored power

the Boer wars

A

british farmers vs dutch farmers (boers)
1806- BR took control of cape region (coast of south Africa - good for trade)
- pushing Boers back into Orange Free state/ Transvall , as Boers disliked control of BR

1867 - diamonds in Transvaal
1880 - First Boer war with BR trying to protect its interest from boer farmers
1900-02 –> SECOND BOER WAR
- Boer used guerilla warefare/ BR gathered women, children and elderly in concentration camps
- over 20,000 ppl died in 40 camps - due to poor managment/neglect

- press were patriotic and reported posituve aspects of war
- daily mail established 1896

direct- financial impact - £217 mill - increased debt
cultural - Boy scouts and girl Guides estbalished - celebrated empire
psychological- 22,000 soldeirs died - ordinary ppl more recognicsed by memorials
political- poor managment/bad troops was a scandal

gov : BR was more powerful/industrial
- Labour party claimed war was for money/ DAVID LLOYD GEORGE said war was a ‘blunder’
