women, old age, catheter, diabetes, dehydration, improper hygiene, use of contraceptives, urinary tract obstruction, immunodeficiency

sterile, normal flora confined to the urethral opening

Why does obstruction increase risk for a UTI
stagnant urine is ideal for bacterial growth

frequency, pain, urgency with urination
What are symptoms from in a UTI
inflammation of the bladder
Clinical presentation of UTIs
cloudy, strong-smelling urine, hematuria, suprapubic tenderness, bladder spasms, no changes are usually found in the physical exam
Diagnosis of UTI
urine analysis, cultures (checking for WBC, RBC, bacteria)
Treatment of UTI
antibiotic based on culture results, hydration
Urosepsis
sepsis caused by an infection in the urinary tract
Complications of UTI
urosepsis, patients can be severely/acutely ill, fever, chills, disorientation
