Urinary system Flashcards
Functions
Regulation of body water, pH, and removing waste material
Cortex
Shell, Outside layer
Medulla
Marrow, Middle layer
Nephr-
Kidney
Ren-
Kidney
Nephron
The functional Unit of the kidney. Filtrates blood, absorbs desirable compounds, waste components are excreted.
6 Function
- Regulates blood volume and blood pressure
- Filters blood
- Maintains electrolyte balance
- Reabsorbs water and useful constituents
- Regulates pH of blood
- Collects and stores Urine
Ureters
Carrie urine from kidney to bladder
Urinary bladder
Stores Urine
Urethra
Drains urine from urinary bladder to out of the body
Cloaca
Junction of ureters, colon, and reproductive tract.
Kidney Shape
Usually bean shaped. Can be lobulated like cow and bird. Pig kidney is flatter, horse kidney is heart shaped
Primary nitrogen in Mammals
Urea
Primary nitrogen in Bird
Uric Acid
Renal Cortex
Outer part of the kidney. Contains renal corpuscle. Which changes blood to filtrate
Renal Medulla
Inner part of the kidney the converts filtrate into urine
Renal pyramids
Cone shaped within the medulla. Converts the filtrate to urine
Renal column
Located between the cones. They hold up the kidney and provide support to the cortex
Renal Pelvis
Funnel shaped the collects the urine from the collecting ducts and carries it to the ureters.
Renal Corpuscle
Aids in converting blood to filtrate. Composed of glomerulus and the glomerular capsule
Renal Tubule
Converts filtrate into urine. Composed of the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule
Adrenal Cortex
Secretes steroid hormones such as aldosterone and cortisone
Adrenal Medulla
Secretes epinephrine and norepinphrine
Glomerular Filtration rate
Filtrate produced per minute by both kidneys
ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone)
Excreted by the posterior pituitary, Increases water retention. Makes you not pee
Aldosterone
Steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex increase sodium retention. Increase the amount of sodium that is kept by the body
Renin
Enzyme that is secreted by the kidney. Converts angiotensinogen into angiotensin I. This increases the amount of aldosterone that is released
Natriuetic hormone
Secreted by heart atria and decreases sodium retention.
Erythropoietin
Protein hormone that is secreted by the kidney. Stimulate RBC production in bone marrow
