Central Nervous System Flashcards
Function
control center of the rest of the body, Composed of brain and spine. Regulates voluntary and involuntary functions of the body for us to breath, walk, and perform many other functions

Gray Matter
contains cell bodies, nuclei and dendrites, unmylinated axons
White matter
high concentrations of myelinated axons
Neurons
Nerve cells, conduct nerve impulses
Glial cells
supporting cells, provide nutrition, support, and make the myelin sheath around axons of neurons
Ventricles
Four internal chambers that are filled with cerebrospinal fluid
Meninges
Connective tissue membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and lie between nervous tissue and bones
Cerebrum
Responsible for higher mental functions
Gyri
thick folds
sulci
grooves
Frontal
Voluntary motor control, reasoning, planning, emotions, social judgement
Parietal lobe
Perceives sensations from skin, muscles, tendons, joint receptors
Temporal lobe
auditory center to receive signals from the ears, important in memory
Occipital Lobe
Responsible for vision and eye coordination
Insula
Integrates sensory information from viscera, taste language function
Corpus Callosum
Connects the two halves of the cerebrum. Carries nerve impulses between two cerebral hemispheres
Thalamus
Relay center for all sensory information except smell.
Hypothalamus
Responsible for regulating many types of behavior such as thirst and hunger, temp, sleep. Produces ADH and oxytocin
Pituitary
Also called hypophysis
Anterior pituitary
Produces and releases somatotropin, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH, Prolactin.
Posterior pituitary
Releases ADH and oxytocin
Optic chiasm
point at which the optic nerve cross over on the way to the brain from the eyes
Limbic System
process olfactory information
Cerebellum
looks like a small shrub, second largest part of the brain, receives input from joint, tendon and muscle receptors, responsible for coordination of movement
Midbrain
Short segment to the brainstem the connects hindbrain and forebrain
Pons
Contains two respiratory centers, pathway for nerve fivers passing through from brain to the spinal cord
Medulla Oblongata
regulation of several autonomic regulations such as blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate
Vasomotor center
Contraction or dilation of blood vessels. Regulates blood pressure
Cardioinhibitory
Parasympathetic innervation, regulates heart pressure
Respiratory center
works with the two respiratory centers in the pons to control respiration rate
Cranial Nerves
Run Directly to the brain rather than through the spinal cord. Most are mixed or have both sensory and motor function
