Functions
Produce sperm, testosterone, and ejaculate during copulation
Testes
Male gonads
Seminiferous tubules
located within the testes, they produce sperm
Leydig cells
Produce testoserone
Sertoli cells
Produce the blood testis barrier so that the immune system doesn’t attack the immune system
Rete testis
Carry sperm from seminiferous tubules to the head of the epididymis
Head of Epididymis
Fluid absorption
Body of Epididymis
Sperm maturation
Tail of Epididymis
Sperm storage
Vas Deferens
carries sperm from the tail of the epididymis to the urethra
Ampulla
Aids in speeding up ejaculation
Accessory Glands
Seminal Vesicles
Prostate
Bulbourethral (Cowpers)
Functions of accessory fluids
Neutralize acidity of urethra, supply nutrients, activate the sperm, and sometimes form a gel plug that doesn’t allow others to fertilize the female
Fibro- Elastic Penis
Lots of connective tissue, doesn’t change length or width, slides in and out of the sheath by the sigmoid flexure and is retracted by the penis retractor muscle
Vascular Penis
Mostly vascular tissue, allows the length and diameter to change.
Paminiform Plexus:
Counter current heat exchange that cools blood entering and warms blood that is leaving
Tunica dartos muscle
wrinkles the skin or smooths it based on the different temperatures
Cremaster muscle
Pulls the testes closer or away from the body
Another temperature regulation
The tail of the epididymis is the furthest thing away from the body and is where the sperm is stored.
