Functions
Produce ova, produce female hormones, carry young until birth
Primordial Follicle
The ovum is surrounded by squamous follicular cells. immature ovum
Primary Follicle
Contains the ovum surrounded by one layer of granulosa cells
Secondary Follicle
contains the ovum surrounded by two or more layers of granulosa cells
Tertiary Follicle
Contains antrum: space filled with follicular fluid that surround the ovum.
Graafian Follicle
contains many layers of granulosa cells and a large antrum. This is the follicule that will ovulate, expelling the egg with a cloud of follicular fluid
Corpus Hemorrhagicum
First ovarian structure to form after ovulation.
Corpus Luteum
Produces progesterone and is maintained during pregnancy
Corpus Albicans
White scar on the ovary. The CL turns into the CA when implantation does not occur in the uterus
Estrogen:
Sex hormone that is produced by follicles that is responsible for sex libido, secondary sex characteristics, and maternal behavior
Progesterone
Sex hormone that is produced by the corpus luteum that is responsible for quieting the uterus during pregnancy
Infundibulum
Surrounds the ovum and catches the egg to carry it down the reproductive tract
Ampulla
The first part of the oviduct that is lined with cilia to move it down the reproduction tract
Ampullary-Isthmus Junction
Site of fertilization
Isthmus
Muscular tube that carries the fertilzed zygote to the uterus
Uterus
responsible for nutrient exchange between mother and fetus
Endometrium
Innermost layer of the uterus. That secretes Histrotroph (uterine milk) that provides nutrition to the embryo.
myometrium
middle layer of a uterus that expels the fetus during birth and also causes cramps
Perimetrium
Outermost layer
Cervix
Is the passageway between the uterus and vagina. Aids in protection agains microorganisms from entering the uterus, is a sperm reservoir, aids in lubrication so allow the fetus to come out
Vagina
Copulatory organ
Clitoris
Innervated part of the female anatomy
Vulva
External femal genitalia
Simplex
No uterine horns, no uterine body, 1 cervix: humans and primates
Duplex
Large uterine horns, no uterine body, 2 cervices: rodents
Bicornuate
Large to moderate horns, small to moderate uterine body, 1 cervix: Pig, cow, mare, sheep, and goat
Placenta
Responsible for nutrient and gas exchange betweeen mother and fetus
Amnion
innermost layer around the fetus, filled with amniotic fluid
Allantois
Middle membrane filled with fluid
Chorion
outermost layer that conatins necrotic tips that prevents hormonal transfer from embryo to embryo.
Diffuse
Many placenta attachments from fetus to mother. pig and horse
Cotylendonary
fetus contains cotylendon mother contains caruncle all together makes a placentome. Ruminants
Zonary
Line of attachement. Dogs, cats
Discoidal
Placenta burrows into uterine wall. Primates and rodents
