Mammary gland
milk producing tissue
Teat
external part of the mammary glands used for suckling
Alveolus
Hollow ball of cells that secretes milk in a lactating female
Myoepithelial cells
cells that contract around alveolus to squeeze milk into fine collecting ducts
Fine duct system
Connects the alveoli to the collecting ducts
Collecting ducts
collect milk from the fine duct system and transport the milk to the gland cistren
Gland cistern
the largest storage area of the mammary gland. collects milk from collecting ducts and stores it
Teat cistern
collects secreted milk from the gland cistren
Streak canal
Milk exit out of the teat from the teat cistern
What structures are not present at birth?
alveoli and fine duct system
medial suspensory ligament
primary support of the udder runs down the middle of the udder
lateral suspensory ligaments
side of the udder for additional support
Skin
Provides small amount of support but also protection
Blood supply to the udder
Pudic artery
pathway for blood to return to the heart
Subcutaneous abdominal veins and pudic veins
