Ureters, Bladder & Urethra Flashcards
Ureters
Arise from each renal pelvis
Slender tubes that carry urine from kidneys to bladder
Peristaltic waves move urine to bladder
Shape prevents back flow
Ureter Wall Layers
- Inner Mucosa - transitional epithelium
- Muscle Layer - inner longitudinal and outer circular smooth muscle
- Outer connective tissue - continuous with fibrous capsule
Urinary Bladder
Collapsible muscular sac
Stores and expels urine
Empty: bladder collapses along rugae (folds), pyramid shape
Full: bladder expands without increase in pressure, spherical
Rugae
Folds in the bladder that allow it to expand
Urethra
Carries urine out of the bladder and out of the body
Bladder Wall
Contains the detrusor muscle for expulsion of urine
Folded into rugae for expansion
Mucosa/transitional epithelium
Trigone
Triangular region between ureter entry points and the urethra
Male Bladder Location
Anterior to rectum
Superior to prostate gland
Female Bladder Location
Anterior to vagina & uterus
Urethra
Thin-walled muscular tube
Drains urine from the bladder
Length varies between M & F
Internal Urethral Sphincter
Region surrounding urethral opening in bladder
Contains muscular sphincter
Detrusor muscle
Involuntary control of urination
External Urethral Sphincter
Located where urethra passes through the urogenital diaphragm
Resting muscle tone
Skeletal muscle - voluntary to permit urination
Male Urethra
Longer than females Passes through prostate gland Part of reproductive system Transports both urine and semen 3 sections: - Prostatic - Membranous - Spongy (penile)
Female Urethra
Shorter than males
Separate from reproductive system
Transports urine only
