Upper Limb Bones Flashcards
What is the humerus?
The bone that makes up the upper arm
What does the head of the humerus articulate with?
The glenoid fossa of the scapula
What is the function of the greater and lesser tubercules?
Muscle attachment of the humerus to the rotator cuff, helps to keep shoulder in place
What is the deltoid tuberosity?
Muscle attachment landmark for deltoid (shoulder) muscles
What side of the forearm is the radius on?
The thumb side, lateral when in anatomical position
What do the trochlea and capitulum do?
Articulate with the ulna & radius
What do the coronoid fossa and olecranon fossa do?
Depressions in the humerus bone: aids with elbow movement (coronoid - flexion movement, olecranon - extension movement)
What is the styloid process?
Part of the radius where the wrist ligaments attach to
What side of the forearm is the ulna on?
The pinky side, medial when in anatomical position
How does the ulna join to the humerus?
Anteriorly at the coronoid process, posteriorly at the olecranon process
What separates the coronoid and olecranon processes? What is its function?
The trochlear notch: grips the trochlea of the humerus
What bones are in the wrists and hands?
The carpals, the metacarpals and the phalanges
How many carpal bones are in the wrist?
Eight carpal bones
How many metacarpals are in a hand?
5 bones, labelled 1-5 starting on the thumb side
How many phalanges are in a hand?
14 bones, proximal, medial and distal phalanges in all fingers but the thumb, it only has a proximal and distal phalanges
