Q

What are analogous traits?

A

Traits that evolve similar to one another but don’t come from a common ancestor
Evolve similar because of similar environmental conditions

Q

What are vestigial structures?

A

Structures in a animal that no longer serve a purpose but is their from past generations - shows they evolved past a point from needing a certain adaptation

Q

What is the difference between volcanic and continental islands?

A

Volcanic: created from volcanic eruption, animals come from swimming or flying

Continental: a piece of continent breaking off and moving away from the mainland, brings animals previously habituating the mainland

Q

What biogeography example provides evidence to evolution?

A

Ancient climate change - Antarctica had a warm climate 53 million years ago, now is known for its glacial landscape and the coldest temperatures on earth

Q

How are fossils formed?

A

Commonly impressions made in rock formed by mineral deposit that replaced remains of animals or plants
* underwater fossils formed from organisms being covered with layers of sediment on the ocean floor, stopping decomposition from the lack of oxygen and causing chemical changes in the body that mineralizes the remains

Q

What are the two theories to dating fossils?

A

Catastrophism: patterns of fossils are accounted for by global catastrophes that wipe out species

Uniformitarianism - geological changes are slow and gradual, natural laws do not change over time

Q

What are transitional fossils?

A

Fossilized remains of animals or plants organism that exhibits common traits to the ancestral and current group in a species

Q

How do fossils account for evidence of evolution?

A

Transitional fossil of a whale: the nose of the transitional fossil was in the middle of the skull, which was a transition from the past ancestor, who’s nose was at the front of its skull. This adaptation led to the modern day whales blowhole
