Thorax Bones Flashcards
How many pairs of ribs are there?
12 pairs
What is the sternum?
The breastbone (a flat bone)
What are the first seven pairs of ribs attached to?
The sternum
What three bones fused together result in the sternum?
The manubrium, the body and the xiphoid process
What do the ribs articulate with?
They posteriorly articulate with the vertebral column and anteriorly articulate with the costal costal cartilage
What are the true ribs?
The first seven pairs, attached to the sternum and are the most superior ribs
What are the false ribs?
Located inferior to the true ribs, three pairs have indirect attachment to the sternum, two pairs have no attachment or are “floating”
What is in between the ribs ?
Intercostal muscles, they aid in breathing
How many vertebrae are in the vertebral column?
Twenty four
What bones make up the vertebral column?
24 vertebrae, sacrum and coccyx (fused together)
What are the areas of the vertebral column listed superior to inferior?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and coccyx
What are invertebral disks?
Located in between vertebrae, offers cushioning and shock absorption. Lessens with age.
What are the primary curvatures in the vertebral column?
Thoracic and sacral - present at birth
What are the secondary curvatures of the vertebral column?
Cervical and lumbar
What are examples of abnormal curvature in the vertebral column?
Scoliosis, kyphosis and lordosis
What is scoliosis?
Exaggerated lateral bending of the spinal column
What is kyphosis?
“Hunchback” - exaggerated thoracic curvature
What is lordosis?
“Swayback” - exaggerated lumbar curvature
