Mitosis Flashcards
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is the process of somatic cell division.
What happens to chromosomes prior to mitosis?
Each chromosome makes an exact duplicate of itself.
What occurs to chromosomes during early prophase?
The chromosomes thicken and coil.
What do centrioles form during early prophase?
Centrioles form asters and move apart.
What begins to disintegrate during early prophase?
The nuclear membrane begins to disintegrate.
What happens to centrioles and asters in late prophase?
Centrioles and asters are at opposite poles.
What disappears in late prophase?
The nucleolus and nuclear membrane have almost completely disappeared.
What happens to doubled chromosomes in metaphase?
Doubled chromosomes line up at mid-cell with their centromeres attached to spindle fibres.
What occurs in early anaphase?
Centromeres split and half the chromosomes move to one pole, half to the other.
What happens in late anaphase?
The chromosomes have almost reached their respective poles.
What completes during telophase?
The cell membrane completes its constriction.
What forms around the separated chromosomes during telophase?
Nuclear membranes form around the separated chromosomes.
What is the result of mitosis completion?
There are two cells with the same structures and number of chromosomes as the parent cell.
