What is os coxae?
The hip bones, the sacrum and the coccyx
What three bones make up the hip bones?
The ilium, the ischium and the pubis
What is the function of the pelvic girdle?
Bears the body’s weight, provides protection for reproductive organs, bladder and large intestine
What is the main landmark of the ilium?
The iliac crest, the hip bone you can feel
What is the sacroiliac joint?
The posterior connection between the ilium and sacrum
What is the acetabulum?
The deep socket where the femur attaches to the hip bones
What is the ischium?
The “sit down” bones
What is the function of the ischial tuberosity?
Receives the body weight when sitting
What does the ischial spines do?
Narrows the birth canal
What is the pubis?
The most anterior part of the pelvic girdle, forms a bar across the front of the body
What is the abturator foramen?
Connects pubis blood vessels and nerves to the anterior thigh
What is the symphisis pubis?
Point of fusion of the 2 pubic bones
What is the difference between the female and male pubis ?
The female pubis
- larger
- lighter
- oval shaped compared to the male triangular shape
- laterally flared ilia
- shorter and further apart ischial spines
- wide birth canal
- shallower pelvis
- broad sacrum
- round pubic arch
