Cell Transport Flashcards
What is a solute?
The substance that is being dissolved
What is a solvent?
The substance the does the dissolving
What is a solution?
The mixture between the solvent and solute
What is diffusion?
The tendency of particles to move from an area where they are highly concentrated to an area where they are less concentrated
What is a concentration gradient?
An area of high concentration to an area of low concentration
What is movement along the concentration gradient called?
Diffusion
What part of the human body relies heavily on diffusion?
The lungs rely on diffusion to add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the blood
What is osmosis?
The diffusion of water across a semi permanent membrane from an area of high concentration of water to low concentration of water
How can water molecules still pass through a cell membrane even if they are not lipid soluble?
Their small size
What side of the membrane do water molecules always pass from?
High concentration to low concentration
What is a hypertonic solution?
When cell is in this solution water leaves the cell
What is a isotonic solution?
When cells are in this solution water enters and leaves at the same rate
What is a hypotonic solution?
When a cell is in this solution water only enters the cell
