Unit 6a - Indirect Object Pronouns Flashcards
In English, there are seven COI: me, you, him, her, it, us, them. French distinguishes between an informal, singular you (te) and a formal or plural you (vous). The French indirect object pronoun does not distinguish gender; lui and leur replace both masc and femen. nouns. In French, COI replaces only animate indirect objects (people or animals).
ME (me), TE (you), LUI (him, her), NOUS (us), VOUS (you - formal or plural), LEUR (them)
Be aware of the difference between leur as an indirect object pronoun and leur(s) as a possessive adjective.
Leur voiture.
Nous leur écrivons.
The object is called indirect, since it is controlled by a preposition.
Je lis le journal.
Le journal is a direct object (COD), since there is no preposition (à, de, etc.) between the verb and the object.
Indirect objects are the indirect receivers of verbal action.
Il apporte le plus beau cadeau à sa mère.
Le plus beau cadeau, the direct object, receives the action of the verb to give. Sa mère, the indirect object, reveals to whom or for whom the verbal action is performed. English often translates indirect objects with to or for.
As with direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns are placed before the verb. The preposition is dropped.
Je téléphone à ma sœur.
I call my sister.
Je lui téléphone.
I call her.
As with direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns are placed before the verb. The preposition is dropped.
Nous écrivons à nos amis.
We write to our friends.
Nous leur écrivons.
We write to them.
As with direct object pronouns, indirect object pronouns are placed before the verb. The preposition is dropped.
