Unit 6 Ch 34 Flashcards
In clinical chemistry there are several uses of clinical chemistry profiles, they are?
screen for disease, assess pre-surgical risk, distinguish between differential diagnoses, assess severity of existing disease, monitor progression/response to therapy, identify patterns
What are pre-analytical factors?
factors that can affect quality of test results (ie. collection procedure, labeling, patient variables and equipment difficulties)
Analytic factors?
actual performance of biochemical assays
chemical analyzers?
quality control and accurate results
What are the types of serum samples?
serum - used for blood chemistry
heparinized plasma
Heparinized whole blood
plasma is?
the fluid portion of whole blood in which cells are suspended
serum is?
plasma from which fibrinogen (a plasma protein) has been removed
Plasma proteins are primarily produced by the?
liver
Plasma proteins have many functions?
structural components of all cells, organs, and tissues, enzymes, buffers, hormones, clotting, defense, transport molecules
Total protein is ?
total protein plasma that includes fibrinogen
Total serum protein are?
all proteins excluding clotting factors
Protein concentrations are affected by?
hepatic systhesis (liver generating protein), altered protein breakdown or excretion and dehydration (levels look higher) or over-hydration (levels look lower)
