Lab workbook pg 92 Unit 6 Flashcards
What are 3 causes of hemolysis in samples?
- when sample is forced through a needle when being transferred to a tube
- when blood is mixed too vigorously after sample collection
- when excess alcohol is used to clean the skin and not allowed to dry before blood collection
What are 2 causes of hyperproteinemia?
animal is dehydrated and has a elevated total protein concentration
What are 2 causes of hypoproteinemia?
animal is overhydrated and has a decreaed total protein concentration
What condition is associated with hypernatremia?
an elevated blood level of sodim
What condition is assoicated with hyponatremia?
a decreased blood level of sodium
Why should you not use the sodium salt of heparin as a coagulant when testing for sodium in the blood?
it can falsely elevate the results
What condition is associated with hyperkalemia?
an elevated blood level of potassium
What condition is associated with hypokalemia?
a decreased blood level of potassium
Why is dehydration usually accompanied by azotemia?
because of urea being an insoluble molecule and how it must be excreted in a high volume of water - which causes dehydration which results in the increased retention of urea in the blood (azotemia)
What tests commonly are performed to evaluate the acinar functions of the pancreas?
amylase and lipase, and trypsinlike immunoreactivity and serum pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity
What is the acinar function?
it secretes enzyme-rich juice that contains the enzymes necessary for digestion in the small intestine
The pancreas is actually two organs, what are they?
one exocrine and one endocrine held together in one stroma
What is another name for endocrine portion of the pancreas?
acinar pancreas - comprises the greatest portion of the pancreas
What does the acinar pancreas secrete?
enzyme-rich juice that contains the enzymes necessary for digestion in the small intestine
What are the 3 primary pancreatic enzymes?
trypsin, amylase, and lipase
