CBC Flashcards
What is Hemoglobin?
measures the amount of the oxygen-carrying protein in the blood.
What is Hematocrit?
measures the percentage of a person’s blood that consists of red blood cells.
What is the White blood cell differential?
may or may not be included as part of the panel of tests. It identifies and counts the number of the various types of white blood cells present. The five types include neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.
What are the 5 types of white blood cells counted on the CBD?
neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils.
What is the CBC?
Complete blood count
often used as a broad screening test to determine an individual’s general health status.
The CBC consists of what?
- total RBC count
- packed cell volume - PCV
- plasma protein concentration
- total WBC count
- blood film exam: differential WBC count, erythrocyte and leukocyte morphology, and platelet estimation
- reticulocyte count when the patent is anemic
- hemoglobin concentration
- erythrocyte indices
What is the PCV?
the percentage of the whole blood that is composed of erythrocytes
How is the PCV run?
place anticoagulated whole blood into a capillary tube (microhematocrit tube)
The buffy coat consists of?
WBC and Platelets
What is above the buffy coat?
Serum
When the serum is cloudy, what does this mean?
called lipemic - could mean that the patient didn’t fast before blood test or there may be a pathologic condition
When the serum is red, what does this mean?
hemolyzed
Normal serum is what color in the microhematocrit tube?
clear, transparent or a pale straw-yellow color
Is plasma is yellow, what does this mean?
icteric - could mean liver disease or hemolytic anemia
Does irregular color in plasma need to be reported?
no
