  1. Describe technique for suctioning a tracheostomy.
A

Gather supplies- mask,
gown, sterile saline and
suction kit

  1. Open kit, remove sterile
    container and pour sterile saline
  2. Apply PPE, hold suction catheter in dominant hand- keep this hand sterile
  3. With other hand, attach catheter to suction, lubricate catheter tip with saline
  4. Insert catheter to point of resistance, back up, and apply suction while removing catheter
  5. Hyperoxygenate between suction swipes

Describe technique for care of patient with a tracheostomy

A

Gather supplies- mask, gown, trach cleaning kit, suction kit, sterile saline and hydrogen peroxide

  1. Wash hands and Apply PPE
  2. Identify your patient and provide privacy, assess your patient for pain, explain procedure, position patient
  3. Suction tracheostomy- remove soiled dressing- note drainage- remove gloves, hand hygiene
  4. Open trach cleaning kit- put on sterile gloves
  5. Keep dominant hand sterile- pour saline and peroxide into containers
  6. Remove inner cannula- soak in peroxide/ or throw away and replace with disposable unit
  7. Cleanse stoma with saline
  8. Clean inner cannula- rinse in saline
  9. Replace inner cannula- change dressing
