Parenteral medications
—medications that are not given to go into digestion system, they are used to go straight into body, like through an injection.
MAR
-Medication Administration Record, used to document how much of each medication the patient has used in the past
Six rights:
Dose,Drug,Documentation,Pateint,Route,Time
Tablet—
Pill that is just pure medication. The medication is just pressed into the form of a tablet.
Capsule
—The medication is closed inside of a shell. This shell is not a part of the medication and is easily broken down and does not affect medication.
Pill crusher-
This device crushes pills. The crushed pill then is a powder, which is used for insertion into foods and liquids.
Meniscus
-Shock absorbing part of knee. This is made up of Cartlidge.
Sublingual
(SL)—beneath tongue. Pills can be taken under the tongue.
Enteric
coated coating that is outside of pills. This protects drugs from being broken down before or in the stomach so it can go throughout system.
Anaphylactic reaction—
Really bad allergic reaction. This can be severely life threatening if not treated immediately.
Topical
–Drug that has to be put on specific part of body.
Transdermal patch-
Patch that is set onto skin. Like a nicotine patch, make sure to always wear gloves when administering these medications\
Inner canthus—
Part of eye where the two eyelids meet.
Conjunctival trough
—mucus that covers eyeball. This helps stop things from getting into the eye.
Nausea
-also known as upset stomach, this can cause the want to puke. This discomfort is caused by digestive system diseases.
PRN
- as needed.
STAT
—immediately/urgently
MDI
- inhaler, this device helps put medications directly into lungs and helps breathing problems.
Spacer
-attachment used on inhaler. This helps to make the inhaler process easier by holding medication in place.
DPI
- Dry powder inhaler. This gets the medication deeper into lungs then regular inhaler because of the dry powder.
Nebulizer
This device makes medicines turn into sprays so they can be administered into the nose If the patent can’t tale medications any other way
Dorsal recumbent position
-Patient lies on back with knees up. This helps relax abdominal muscles.
Syringe
-device used to help inject fluids into body. This is used to administer shots.
Subcutaneous injection
—injection that goes into body through the subcutaneous layer of skin. This goes into the fatty tissue.
Intramuscular injection
—injections that go straight into the muscles directly. These go into specific muscles not just any random muscle site
Ventroglueteal site-
Recommended site of injections. This is near the gluteus muscles and is recommended because of the large muscle mass that is around it.
Vastus lateralis site—
site of injection that is on the vastus lateralis muscle, on the leg.
Deltoid site-
Site of injection that is on the deltoid muscle.
Greater trochanter-
site of injection that is on the on the hip. This is on the top of the femur and the widest part of hip.
Intradermal injection-
injection that goes directly into dermis
Tuberculin needle
—this is a syringe used for tb tests and is injected between skin,
Insulin syringe
—consists of three parts. These parts and short/thin and allow for the reducment of pain. There is a cap that protects the needle.
Vial-
thin plastic bottle that stores medications.
Ampule
—tiny bottle that holds medications. These medications are used for injections.
Reconstituting
—when you add a specific amount of liquid to a dry solution so you can make a specific amount of liquid concentrate.
Filter needle—
This filter prevents fluids from going back through needle. It allows either withdrawal or injections but prevents the other from happening.
Wheal (Bleb)
- change in color on small part of skin, that is also raised.
Z-track method-
put pressure on skin when giving injection. This is used when going into the muscles.
