Umbilicus-
A
“belly button”- where the umbilical cord detached as a baby being delivered.

Hernia
A
- when an organ or structure gets pushed through the abdominal wall into the adipose tissue, this can be very painful for a patient.

LBM-
A
Loose bowel movement, this is also known as diarrhea, where the bowels are loose and unavoidable.

Flatus
A
“farting”, this is gas that has gone through digestive tract and exited body out of rectum

Bowel sounds
A
- Sounds of the intestines digesting and moving food through digestive system. This means food is currently being digested.

Active
A
– normal sounds of digestive system. Food is being digested as it moves through digestive system and is doing so in a normal, healthy manner

Hyperactive
A
- bowel sounds that are loud and higher pitched. These are caused by bowel obstruction or diarrhea. Abnormal sounds that are louder than usual – increase in sounds

Hypoactive
A
-Bowel sounds that are too quiet and low pitched. This can be caused by inflammation- decrease in sounds.

Tympany
A
- gas filled abdomen. This produces a hollow sound that is comparable to a drum when it is palpated.

Ascites
A
- comparable to edema, this is when fluid is collecting inside of abdomen. Thos painful condition can cause lungs and other vital organs to be affected.

Dullness
A
- after palpation, dullness can either be a normal sound (feces/fluid) or can be abnormal sound (abnormal organ size). This is typically a low slow sound that is deep.

Distention
A
- an abdomen that is swollen outward. This usually is abnormal and can be caused by many things like gas

Quadrants
A
- abdomen is divided into 4 quadrants that help with identification of problems in a patient- Left upper, left lower, right upper, and right lower

Rigidity
A
- When the abdoman is pressed down upon, the muscles stiffening up involuntarily.

Pulsation
A
- The feeling of a heartbeat in your stomach, this is due to abdominal aorta. This will always have a pulse, but not always is it recognizable.
