Unit 3 - Lecture 6 Flashcards
What are the local clinical aspects of neoplasia?
atrophy, luminal obstruction, neuropathy, and inflammation
What systemic effects does neoplasia have on bone marrow?
anemia and bone marrow damage
What is myelophthisis?
effacement of marrow by neoplastic cells or inflammation/organism
What is myelofibrosis?
the replacement of marrow by fibrous tissue
What is the outcome of bone marrow damage?
thrombocytopenia and neutropenia
What is thrombocytopenia?
the inability to make a sufficient amount of platelets which leads to an increased risk of hemorrhage
What is neutropenia?
the inability to make a sufficient amount of neutrophils leading to an increased risk for infection
What are paraneoplasic syndromes?
symptoms or signs in neoplastic disease that are unexplained by the physical effects of local or distant spread
What are some generalized paraneoplastic syndromes?
recruiting of TNF alpha, IL-1, and IL6, cachexia, anorexia, malaise, and fever of unknown cause
What is cachexia?
rapid weight loss
What causes anorexia?
loss of interest in eating
What is malaise?
the lack of motivation to move
What are some paraneoplastic syndromes associated with hypercalcemia of malignance and PTH-related protein?
lymphoma (dogs) and anal sac gland adenocarcinoma
What is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with hyperestrogenism and feminization in dogs?
sertoli cell tumor
What are some system paraneoplastic syndromes in animals?
systemic anorexia/cachexia and fever
