Unit 2 Intro Flashcards
Enzymes
Speed up reactions and make life possible
Fastest enzyme
A phosphate group. Removes phosphates from ATP. 10 ms rather than 10 trillion year
Enzymes help metabolic reactions
Grow, reproduce, move, respond to stimuli, and harness and use energy
Energy
The ability to do work. All chemical and physical properties. Can be converted into other forms
Forms of energy
Electrical, chemical, mechanical, and electromagnetic
Types on electromagnetic energy
Visible, infrared and ultraviolet
Two types of energy
Kinetic and potential
Kinetic energy
Energy of on object because of its motion
Kinetic energy examples
Waves, falling rocks, electricity (moving electrons), light (moving photons)
Potential energy
Stored energy because of its position or chemical structure. C and H have high Ep, where O and N have low
Potential energy examples
Boulder at the top of a cliff, arrangement of atoms
How molecules gain potential energy
The farther and electron from the nucleus the more Ep it has. The electronegativity of an atom greatly influences its potential energy
