Understanding and Apply Scrum [P2]: Scrum Values - Intralinks Case Study: Scrum Reboot This Time With The Values Flashcards
the catch with Scrum?
It is a framework (the “easy to learn” part) that will not deliver on its promise unless it is exercised with its core values (the “hard to do” part).
What is the main purpose of the SM according to the Scrum guide?
The Scrum Master is responsible for ensuring Scrum is understood and
enacted … The Scrum Master is a servant-leader for the Scrum Team.
The Scrum Master helps those outside the Scrum Team understand which of their interactions with the Scrum Team are helpful and which aren’t.
The Scrum Master helps everyone change these interactions to maximize the value created by the Scrum Team.”
What is the main purpose of the PO according to the Scrum guide?
- “The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the Product Backlog … For the Product Owner to succeed, the entire organization must respect his or her decisions.”
- product ownership!!!
What are the seven Scrum principles that Intralink identified?
- self-organisation
- team size and composition
- done means done
- empowered product owners
- servant-leader SMs
- Team ownership of adaption
- delivery of business value
What does the principle of self-organisation mean in terms of Scrum?
- to take on work, make a plan to complete the work, and execute that plan
- can result in sense of ownership and more committed to convos about value
What does the principle of team size and composition mean in terms of Scrum?
- between 3 and 9 people, and consisting of all the skills necessary to do the work required of the team to produce done software
- follows directly on from self-org - must figure out what size/composition of required
What does the principle of done means done mean in terms of Scrum?
- only deliver done work i.e. meets DoD
- fix issues ASAP
- reinforced the values of focus (on the Definition of Done), courage (to
admit when work was not done), and respect (by refusing to waste stakeholder’s time with unfinished work)
What does the principle of empowered product ownership mean in terms of scrum?
- PO can make decisions about the product
- teams can make rapid decisions (rather than waiting for consensus, sign of reqs)
- change is always communicated to the team through the PO
What does the principle of scrum master as the servant-leader mean in terms of scrum?
- obvious - scrum expert & remove impediments
- less obvious - servant-leader
- shouldn’t manage the adherence to scrum
- observes and reacts to deviance from the scrum framework - opportunity to ask the team why it’s happening —> don’t necessary want to correct, instead SM may choose to see where it goes and give the team an opp. to self-correct
- struggling to adhere = time to inspect
- e.g. improving team initiatives
What does the principle of adaptation requires ownership mean in terms of scrum?
- ownership is the driving force behind empirical process
- team needs to have ownership to come up with improvement proposals
- promotes commitment to improve and openness to speak constructively about issues
What does the principle of delivering measurable business value mean in terms of scrum?
- When the backlog is refined and work is taken on in a Sprint Backlog, it must be accompanied by some hypothesis about the value it will deliver.
- This value must be expressed in a way that is quantifiably measurable after it is released, and tracking against that metric is required.
- E.g. The Product Owner was not expected to accurately predict the outcome, but rather to make a case and provide a means by which the actual result could be measured against what had been forecast.
- PO has respect of org to describe business value in measurable terms —> team can focus —> all committed to assess actual value once shipped
