Developing People and Teams [P2]: Leadership Styles - Leading high performing teams Flashcards
Patterns of success for leading high performing teams?
- goal
- leadership - lead by example, work hard and expect others to do so, largely self-managing
- culture - extreme teamwork, always having each other’s backs, fill in the gaps
- continual improvement - i..e retro, talk through goods and bads
- transparency - everything exposed
- rapid experimentation - try new ideas, get feedback
- fun
- courage
- trust
What two things must be present for self-management
- Anabsenceof traditional management.
- A light set of constraints. Constraints help balance autonomy with accountability. Constraints might be an iteration, a Sprint Review, a social contract or a facilitated meeting.
How do you create the right level of an absence of traditional management? (3 areas)
- The art of it is choosinghow much space to leaveby actively stepping out, in order to allow others space to step in.
- Clarity
- Competence
- Control
Explain clarity
what do you seek? What difference does it make and to who? Why is this important? What does success look like?
Explain competence
does the team/individual have the competence to deal with this situation (or at least the growth mind-set to learn what is required). Does the structure support them in their level of competence? What help might they need?
Explain control
delegate control to the people doing the work, once the platform of Clarity and Competence is in place.
What is the Cynefin Framework?
4 corners :
- simple,
- complicated,
- complex
- chaotic
Explain the “simple” corner of the Cynefin Framework
- standard operating procedures
- best practices
- one or few good answers
Explain the “complicated” corner of the Cynefin Framework
- analysis
- expert mindset
- a range of possible answers
Explain the “complex” corner of the Cynefin Framework
- patterns
- never complete
- the stakeholders decide what is good
Explain the “chaotic” corner of the Cynefin Framework
- take action
- push into other domains
