How does
Passionate Love
Develop?
Through our:
1. Arousal
2. Thoughts
Arousal
Two factor theory of emotion
Passionate attraction is due to:
- physiological arousal
- believing another person caused our arousal
Misattributions –
mistakes we make interpreting our
feelings
Excitation transfer –
occurs when we are aroused by 2
stimuli, but we ignore one of them attributing our arousal to only one stimulus
- E.g., fear labelled as attraction
suspension bridge experiment
-go to a scary movie,sky daving,hunted house
Limits to misattribution and excitation transfer
- time(paired association) - you have to be right there
- attributional clarity (recognize cause of arousal)
Thoughts
Preoccupation and obsessive thought
* “The more you love, the more you think;
* The more you think, the more you love”
-texting
“Love is blind”
* reinterpret undesirable information
through idealization
Tied to our self-concept
* being in love increases self-esteem, is rewarding
