Cross-cultural Similarities – Facial Features

•Symmetrical (Fink et al., 2006)
Women
• Hourglass shape (Valentova at al., 2017)
•Waist to hip ratio of 0.7
•Waist to bust ratio of 0.75 (Voracek & Fisher, 2006)
•Slender and normal weight (Faries & Bartholomew, 2012)
- is about ratio not size!
- it gives the impression that the women is healthy and can birth children ( man can pass down genetic)
Men
•Broad shoulders and muscles
•Waist to hip ratio of 0.9
•Shoulder to hip ratio of 1.2
•ALSO must have resources (e.g. good salary)
•Taller than female partner
•Intelligence
Muscled men (before) and/or skinny (now) man are preferred for women maybe due to intelligence
Less clear what women prefer
Evolutionary Perspective
•Preferred physical shapes are linked to better physical and mental health
•Attractive people have more reproductive success (more children) than less attractive (Jokela, 2009)
•These findings suggest a biological basis for attraction
Social Factors and Attraction: economic
•Thin individuals are less attractive when food supply is unreliable
•In prosperous times, slender is deemed attractive

•For example, Black and Latino men like heavier women than white men (Glasser et al., 2009)
•But still prefer waist to hip ratio of 0.7!
